Blackfish was an official selection of the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and has been instrumental in raising awareness about orca captivity.

After two weeks traipsing through exotic, faraway worlds, I knew I was back on Maui when a baby whale breached off the side of the boat as Marty Dread sang, “It’s gonna be a bright, bright sunshiny day.”
The sun was sinking into the sea in the vicinity of Lahaina. Assorted baby whales and their mothers played lazily in the water as Marty did his weekly gig on behalf of Pacific Whale Foundation. His sunset cruises during whale season are one of those things that make me glad to get visitors from the Mainland each year.

Josefina came to Ecuador in 2002.  She returned in 2004 and over the course of a month toured the central coast of Ecuador in Machalilla National Park and visited Salinas.  She came back again in 2005.  Though we can say Josefina probably likes Ecuador, she is not your typical tourist.  She is one of the thousands of humpback whales that arrive in the waters of Ecuador every year between June and September - part of a yearly migration to mate and give birth in warm equatorial waters.

Josefina, along with other whales like  Clarita, Clementina, and Tres Rayos (Three Stripes) are all part of the national register of the Pacific Whale Foundation (PWF)...
